Tokoname x Kutani Japanese Tea Pot "Hanakomori"

This Japanese Tea Pot Hanakomori is a fine piece that was created by collaborating Tokoname-yaki and Kutani-yaki. The teapot is made by Mr. Hirotaka Umehara, a traditional craftsman of Tokoname ware, and hand-painted by Mr. Tsugimori Tamura, a master of Kutani ware painting.

Tokoname and Kutani are two pottery production centres in Japan that have preserved the tradition for many years.
The tea pot is made using the rokuro – the potter’s wheel – from red clay.
The concept of this tea pot is simple, light, and easy to use.
Various painting techniques such as blue grain, red grain, gold leaf, silver leaf, transfer overglaze painting are skilfully combined to create a balance with the shape of the tea pot.

The Ceramesh strainer used in this teapot is very special and requires exemplary craftsmanship to produce. The precision of the tea strainer is what sets Tokoname yaki teapots apart from others and it is this traditional technique that craftsmen are particularly proud of.

Tokoname is one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, located on the west coast of Chita Peninsula, in Aichi Prefecture. It has a long history in pottery making spanning a thousand year.
